How time flies! I am extremely proud to be entering our 22nd year in the Supercar Championship. It only feels like yesterday that I had Steve Richards running around in a VS Holden Commodore and a year later Garth and Bargs.
Along the journey we have helped develop some of our countries leading drivers and have watched them come and go and for 2017 come again! I am really, really pleased to have Garth back at GRM to hopefully finish his career where it all began. Of course the past 3 seasons with the Volvo and particularly Scotty will in years to come provide me with many fond memories, but so do the late ‘90’s and early 2000’s when we were competing head to head with the HRT powerhouse and winning Bathurst.
2017 sees GRM’s return to racing Holden’s. Of course I am disappointed that we couldn’t find a resolution with Volvo that would see us race the S60 and this disappointment is more for my people who put so much time and effort to design and build such a competitive car. They should be all very proud of their achievement with what they did in such a short period of time with the Volvo.
In the 2017 Supercar Championship James Moffat will continue in the 34 car and Garth Tander will race the 33 car. Joining James for the Endurance Cup will be Richard Muscat. Richard competed in the 2016 Dunlop Series following a season in Carrera Cup and also previous racing in the Australian GT Championship. I was particularly impressed with Richard’s performance in his first season driving a Supercar and his ability to adapt to these cars and his “no fuss” approach sees him fit in really well with our Team. Richard is extremely committed and after concreting with the family business rushes into the workshop to see how he can help the team. I am really pleased that Richard has developed to such a level that I believe he will be an extremely valuable Endurance Driver.
James “Bieber” Golding will join Garth for the Endurance Cup and we also plan to take advantage of the wildcard opportunities and run Bieber in a couple of the Supercar sprint rounds throughout the season. Bieber is in his final year of his Mechanics Apprenticeship with us and finished 4th in the Dunlop Series last season. I certainly see similarities between Bieber and Garth in his younger years. I am sure that if he keeps his eyes and ears open Bieber will learn a lot from Garth throughout the season.
The opportunity to continue doing what we do is provided by those who support our team. It is really pleasing to be here at Essendon Fields where our naming right sponsor Wilson Security has recently relocated their head office. I have said it previously but the loyalty and faith in my team that the Wilson Group, PAYCE and Valvoline have displayed really motivates all at GRM.
Again, over the past 20 years there have been some tremendous highs, disappointing lows and plenty of in between. I certainly look forward to the roller coaster of emotions throughout 2017.
